FAQ answers

Q8. What is a hybrid amplifier ?

Ans :

Hybrid amplifier means an amplifier which built with both tubes and transistors mixed together in the signal path. Some manufacturers just use transistors to build the  power supply circuit and  the amplification circuit is pure tubes, that is not exactly classified as a hybrid amplifier.

A more reasonable designed hybrid circuit is using vacuum tube as the front end voltage amplification stage, and the output driver stage will use transistors. It is because transistor can provide a very high current and good damping factors to control the woofer movement in a more effective way. A well designed hybrid amplifier should have totally warm and sweet  tube sound quality but with the good bass control as a  transistor amplifier.

Those who listen to a very board variaty of music mostly find hybrid amplifier is what they needed. There are certain speakers in the market which design for solid-state amplifiers, especially those planner speakers. By using hybrid amplifier to drive those type of speaker, you will get the expected bass control with liquid and sweet tube sounding mid and high at the same time.
